Boreal Mix - A Swedish forest conservation project

Climate package contributing to the preservation of old-growth forests in Sweden.

This project is unique as it is one of few projects aiming to protect old-growth forests in Sweden, forests that are vulnerable and threatened by logging. The project simultaneously addresses two of the major global crises we face: climate change and the rapidly increasing loss of biodiversity. Since these two are closely interlinked, they must also be managed together. Rich biodiversity provides protection against a changing climate, as stable ecosystems are better equipped to handle pressures such as extreme weather, fires, and pests. The project ensures the preservation of forests with high ecological values and promotes biodiversity. Conservation is realized by providing forest owners with financial support to let valuable forests remain, instead of logging them. In close dialogue with Sami communities, great consideration is also given to grazing lands and reindeer migration routes. The result is more robust and resilient ecosystems that can better withstand a changing climate and offer secure habitats for species. With 93% of Sweden's forest land used for production, boreal forests are under increasing pressure. As a crucial part of the global carbon cycle, they store more carbon on land than any other ecosystem.
