About this project This project captures methane from landfills and converts it into renewable energy. In this way, the project delivers clean electricity to the local power grid, while preventing one of the most powerful greenhouse gases from being released into the atmosphere. Methane has about 80 times the warming effect of carbon dioxide over a 20-year period, and since it only remains in the atmosphere for about a decade, reducing methane emissions is one of the fastest ways to slow down short-term warming. Every day, approximately 850–900 tonnes of unsorted household waste is received at the landfill, which means about 25 million cubic meters of landfill gas is captured each year. The project focuses on developing a sustainable waste management plan by investing in technology that increases the rate of gas capture, while educating the next generation about climate change, recycling, and green energy.
